Viennese parking sheriffs now scan the number plates of cars to determine whether the owner has a permit to park adjacent to them; the old parking sticker, previously a visible sign as a white-blue adhesive label that you are not allowed to get a ticket in your home district, has become obsolete.

The city of Vienna is relying on digitalization in parking space management. As of October 1, it has “stuck it out”: no more new parking stickers will be issued in the future. Vienna is converting the existing system to “OCR image recognition” (Optical Character Recognition).

From October 1, 2023 the number plate will be digitally scanned – and it will be determined whether the vehicle is parked legally because the owner lives in the district and has dutifully transferred the 120 euro annual premium – otherwise, as is well known, a 36 euro parking fine is due. In the case of an organ mandate or even a charge, it will be correspondingly more expensive. The city also hopes this measure will contribute to climate protection because adhesive labels will no longer have to be printed.

As before, the virtual Pickerl must be applied for at the relevant municipal district office for the place of residence. Once the application has been approved, the corresponding notice is sent. However, the sticker will no longer be required in the future. What also remains unchanged is that fewer fees will be charged to applicants for applications via online forms.

Digitization City Councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) speaks of a “milestone for climate protection.” “It saves car owners from having to glue or replace their windshields when they break.” This makes Vienna’s parking management even more customer-friendly, and the environment can also rejoice: we can avoid using a lot of plastic.” This also means that electronic processing will be accelerated, and the process from application to issuance will be further simplified.
